The best-known study was published in the British Journal of Dermatology in 2019. Forty-four people used either 0.5% bakuchiol twice a day or 0.5% retinol once a day for 12 weeks. Researchers tracked their skin with high-resolution photos.
Here's what they found:
- Softer-looking lines. Both groups saw a similar drop in wrinkle surface area.
- More even tone. Both groups saw dark spots fade, with no meaningful difference between them.
- Less irritation. The retinol group reported more scaling and stinging.
The researchers concluded that bakuchiol is a promising, better-tolerated option.1 That's the heart of why we use it. It's one study, so we don't oversell it. But it's a well-designed one, and it lines up with what our customers tell us.

can you use bakuchiol while pregnant or nursing?
Retinoids are generally advised against during pregnancy. Bakuchiol is not a retinoid, which is why so many moms turn to it. Research on bakuchiol in pregnancy specifically is still limited.
