quick answer: Start by removing synthetic fragrance, harsh sulfates and petroleum-based ingredients from your home. Then build around one gentle base that works for every age: grass-fed and finished tallow from suet. From there each person only needs a product or two chosen for their skin.
Building a skincare routine for yourself is one thing. Building one that works for everyone in your house is a different problem. A newborn with sensitive skin, a teenager with oily skin and an adult with dryness all seem to need different things.
The usual answer is a different product for every person and every concern. The industry is built on that model. More products, more steps, more spending.
The ancestral answer is simpler. Start with ingredients that work with skin rather than against it. Then let each formula handle specific needs without adding synthetic ingredients that create new problems.
Here's how to think about it, from the ingredients that matter most to the questions worth asking before you buy anything.
start with what you're removing, not what you're adding
The most helpful thing most families can do for their skin isn't finding a new product. It's removing the wrong ones they already use.
Most households use dozens of personal care products every day. Shampoo, body wash, lotion, face cream, lip balm. Each has its own ingredient list and together they add up. For children this matters more. Their skin is thinner and more reactive than adult skin.
Before adding anything new, do a label audit. Look for these:
- Synthetic fragrance. It shows up as "fragrance," "parfum" or "scent." It's one of the most common causes of skin sensitivity from skincare and it's in most conventional personal care products. That includes many made for babies. It's the first item on the Edenwild Never List and it's the first thing to remove from your family's routine.
- Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES). These are harsh cleansers that can strip the skin barrier. They're common in body wash, shampoo and face cleanser. That squeaky-clean feeling usually means your skin has lost the oils it needs.
- Parabens. These are synthetic preservatives that have raised questions about hormone activity. They're found in many conventional lotions and creams.
- PEGs (polyethylene glycols). These are petroleum-derived ingredients used to blend formulas and help other ingredients absorb more deeply. That makes the rest of the ingredient list matter even more.
- Mineral oil and petrolatum. These petroleum derivatives sit on top of the skin without offering any nourishment. They're common in conventional baby products and body lotions.
You can see everything Edenwild leaves out and why on our Never List.
the foundation: one ingredient that works for everyone
Here's what makes a whole-family routine simpler than it seems. The foundation for healthy-looking skin is the same across ages and skin types.
Grass-fed and finished tallow from suet.
Its fatty acids (oleic, palmitic and stearic acid along with conjugated linoleic acid) are similar to the fats found naturally in human skin. It carries fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K in their natural form. There's no synthetic fragrance and nothing added. It supports the skin barrier instead of sitting on top of it or stripping it away.
For little ones with sensitive skin it's a gentle, simple choice. For teenagers with oily skin it can seem backwards, but oily skin is often skin that's missing moisture and tallow helps restore that balance. For adults dealing with dryness, sensitivity or visible aging it gives skin both comfort now and nourishment over time.
One ingredient. Every member of your household. Different formulas built around it for different needs.

for babies and young children
Baby skin isn't just smaller adult skin. It's thinner and more delicate with a barrier that's still developing. That makes ingredient choices matter more.
Most conventional baby skincare contains synthetic fragrance, mineral oil and a mix of preservatives. Those ingredients raise questions on adult skin and even more on a baby's.
For dry, reactive baby skin the simplest approach works best. A gentle fat that gives the barrier what it needs without anything extra competing with it.
Happy Baby Balm was the first Edenwild product. I made it for my oldest daughter's sensitive, reactive skin when nothing else was working. It pairs grass-fed and finished tallow from suet with colloidal oatmeal, which has been studied for its soothing, skin-comforting properties. No synthetic fragrance. No mineral oil.
For the rest of your baby's routine look for a gentle cleanser free from synthetic fragrance and harsh sulfates with the shortest ingredient list you can find. Less is more for little ones. Our Gentle Skin Trio covers balm, soap and shampoo in one set.
for children and tweens
As kids grow their skin changes. Oil production picks up and everyday exposure adds up. For kids who've always had sensitive skin, this stage can bring new challenges.
The basics stay the same. No synthetic fragrance, no harsh sulfates, few ingredients. And when kids start getting curious about skincare (often from social media) it's a great time to teach them to read a label.
Teaching a child to spot "fragrance" on a label and understand that a longer ingredient list isn't a better product is a skill that lasts a lifetime. Our Ingredients Glossary is a great place to start together.
For dry or sensitive skin Happy Baby Balm works for growing kids too. It's simple enough for daily use from head to toe.
for teenagers
Teenage skin usually means more oil, larger-looking pores and more breakouts. The typical response is harsh. Stripping washes and mattifying products that leave skin dry one day and oily the next.
That approach often makes things worse. Skin that's stripped over and over tends to produce even more oil. And a teen routine full of synthetic fragrance and preservatives adds more stress to skin that's already reactive.
The ancestral approach is to give the skin barrier what it needs so it can find its own balance.
Morning Dew Tallow Balm is a lightweight everyday balm that works for most skin types, including oily and combination skin. Grass-fed and finished tallow from suet is the base. It's paired with camellia, argan and black cumin seed oil, which has a long history in traditional skincare. Many teens find it leaves their skin feeling more balanced than the stripping approach did.
For teens who want something lighter for daytime, Alpenglow Serum layers easily and contains no essential oils.
for adults: sensitive, aging and everything in between
Adult skin concerns tend to be more specific. Sensitivity that's built up over years of synthetic ingredients. Visible aging. Dryness that never quite goes away.
For sensitive adult skin Happy Baby Balm is just as gentle for you as it is for your little ones. For visible aging, Nectar Serum paired with Golden Root Antioxidant Balm makes a complete ritual. Bakuchiol and vitamin C for brighter, smoother-looking skin. Frankincense resin and grass-fed and finished tallow from suet for nourishment and comfort.
For dry skin that wants deep nourishment, Alpenglow Serum layers beautifully under a tallow balm.

how to read a skincare label for your family
The most useful thing you can do for your family's skin is learn to read a label. Not just avoiding a list of bad ingredients but understanding what you're looking at.
- Ingredients are mostly listed from highest to lowest amount. The first few ingredients make up most of the formula. If water comes first and a synthetic emulsifier comes second, most of what follows is there in small amounts.
- "Fragrance" or "parfum" is a catch-all. One word on the label can stand for hundreds of undisclosed chemicals. Brands generally don't have to tell you what's in their fragrance blend.
- "Natural" and "clean" are unregulated. They mean whatever a brand decides they mean. A full ingredient list is the only real sign of transparency.
- Short ingredient lists are usually better. This is especially true for sensitive or reactive skin. Every added ingredient is one more thing that could irritate.
Every Edenwild product page shows the full ingredient list. No proprietary blends and nothing hidden behind a trade name. You can look up every ingredient we use in our Ingredients Glossary.
a simple whole-family routine
The goal isn't a 10-step routine for everyone in your house. It's the fewest products with the fewest ingredients that meet each person's needs.
For most families that looks something like this:
- Babies and young children: Gentle Skin Trio. Done.
- Children and tweens: Happy Baby Balm and a gentle cleanser free from synthetic fragrance. Plus some label-reading practice.
- Teenagers: Morning Dew Tallow Balm, Alpenglow Face Serum and a gentle cleanser.
- Adults: Golden Hour Set and a gentle cleanser.
Simple. Intentional. Rooted in ingredients that work with skin rather than against it.
